Greenwillows Associates is a friendly, family-run independent ecological consultancy based near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. We currently operate with five ecologists, two full-time admin staff, with an additional 20 part-time, mainly seasonal, field workers. We also participate in an ongoing paid internship scheme with The Open University.

We conduct a wide variety of protected species, arboricultural and habitat surveys across the East and South-East of England. Our clients range from large utility companies, developers and architects through to schools and individual homeowners.

We are currently expanding and also offer practical arboricultural works, habitat creation and habitat management services.

We have a fantastic opportunity available for an ambitious and passionate Ecologist to join our team.

Role Purpose

As part of our expansion we are recruiting for an Ecologist, with a minimum of two years’ experience in ecological consultancy, to join our team on a permanent, full-time basis. The role will incorporate both field and office work and you will be working directly with the main team based at the head office. The role will primarily incorporate work relating to UK protected species and habitats, but there also may be opportunities to undertake practical habitat management and creation depending on the candidate’s skill set and interests.

Education, qualifications and training

  • Degree or post-graduate degree (or equivalent) in an ecology or related field
  • Protected species survey licence holder, at least Level 2 Bat Licence OR Level 2 Great Crested Newt or evidence of significant progress towards obtaining such
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in ecological consultancy
  • Holder of CSCS card
  • Holder of Emergency First Aid at work qualification
  • Lantra Brushcutter/Timmers- Maintenance and Operation
  • City and Guilds NPTC Level 2 Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-cutting
  • City and Guilds NPTC Level 2 in Felling and Processing Trees up to 380mm
  • Membership of CIEEM, ideally Associate Level or nearly at the level desired for Associate

Knowledge, work and other relevant experience

  • Good field skills and a sound base in flora/fauna ID skills.
  • Experience of assisting with preparing successful mitigation licences (in relation to bats and/or great crested newts)
  • A sound knowledge of relevant ecology legislation
  • A thorough grounding in best practice survey techniques
  • A competent working knowledge of MS Office
  • Experience in writing technical proposals, reports and ES chapters
  • Experience in applying for badger sett closure licences
  • Experience of undertaking bat call analysis and identifying bat sonograms
  • Proven experience of acting as Ecological Clerk of Works

Skills and capabilities

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, including confident and personable telephone manner
  • Good interpersonal skills to allow effective liaison with planners, developers, professional advisors, contractors, landowners, the general public and others
  • Good organisational and report writing skills
  • Ability to produce high quality habitat maps using mapping software such as QGIS, Auto Cad etc

 

Personal qualities

  • Desire and commitment to keeping up to date with best practice guidelines
  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and prioritise work

 

Special working conditions e.g. shift working

  • Ability to work flexible hours, particularly night work during summer months where necessary

 

Additional requirements

  • A full current driver’s licence valid in the UK
  • Located within an hour’s drive of our Warboys office, or willing to relocate
  • Clean criminal record as confirmed by DBS check

Position: Senior/Principal Ecologist

Role purpose

As part of our expansion we are recruiting for a Senior/Principal Ecologist, with a minimum of six years’ experience in ecological consultancy, to join our team on a permanent, full-time basis. The role will incorporate both field and office work and you will be working directly with the main team based at the head office. This is a managerial position and will incorporate direct line management as well as providing general technical guidance and support to more junior ecologists in the team.

  • Protected Species Licence holder (ideally more than one)
  • Full member of CIEEM
  • Holder of CSCS card
  • Holder of Emergency First Aid at work qualification
  • Registered Chartered Ecologist (CIEEM)

Knowledge, work and other relevant experience

  • Minimum of six years’ experience in ecological consultancy.
  • Ability to produce high quality habitat maps using mapping software such as QGIS, Auto Cad etc
  • Sound ecological knowledge and excellent working knowledge of relevant legislation and policy
  • Experience in applying for European Protected Species Mitigation licences ideally as named ecologist or suitably qualified to do so for future applications
  • Experience in post planning documents such as ECOP, CEMP, LEMP, EMP
  • Experience of providing pragmatic and strategic consultancy advice to clients
  • Experience in writing technical proposals, reports and ES chapters
  • Experience of undertaking bat call analysis and identifying bat sonograms
  • Experience in applying for badger sett closure licences ideally as named ecologist or suitably qualified to do so for future applications

 

Management

  • Experience of managing a team and overseeing multiple concurrent projects
  • Experience of recruiting, leading and training staff
  • Ability to organise others’ workloads and delegate effectively

  • Excellent communication and written skills and the ability to author and audit reports and other technical documents
  • Confident communicator with strong written and verbal skills, able to prioritise the delivery of a dynamic workload
